Foods That Are Good For Your Eyes
Everyone knows the age old tip that carrots are good for your eyesight. However, maybe you didn’t know about all the other foods that are good for your eyes.
In this article, we will give you some other ideas for foods you can eat to help with your eye health.
Salmon, Tuna and Oysters
In fish there is a natural amount of omega-3. Omega-3 is key in relieving symptoms of dry and itchy eyes as it helps to reduce evaporative tear loss. If you are not a big fish fan, then you can take omega-3 supplements, available in most pharmacies.
Dark Leafy Greens
Examples of these include, spinach, collard greens and kale. Within these leafy foods, zeaxanthin and lutein are produced. Both of these have been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and vision loss.
Particularly the yolks of eggs are important for improving the health of your eyes. As well as being another rich source of zeaxanthin, egg yolks are high in zinc. Zinc is naturally found in our retina and is vital in reducing vision loss.
Nuts such as pistachios, almonds and walnuts are rich in omega-3 and vitamin E. Vitamin E reduces the progression of AMD and cataracts. It also protects the eyes cells from free radical damage.
Grapefruit, Oranges and Strawberries
Another vitamin which is a must have for better eye health is vitamin C. Citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges and berries like strawberries and blueberries are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is proven to reduce the risk of nuclear cataracts and delay AMD.
Whole grain foods that are good for your eyes include quinoa, brown rice, whole oats and whole-wheat breads and pastas. They promote your overall eye health as they contain vitamin E, zinc and niacin.
Carrots, Sweet Potato, Mangos and Apricots
Carrots and other orange coloured fruits and vegetables are probably by far the most well known foods that are good for your eyes. Beta-Carotene is a type of vitamin A that gives the foods their orange colour. This vitamin helps the retina and other parts of the eye to function properly. It also helps your eyes ability to adjust to darkness. This is why you may have been commonly told, eating carrots helps you to see in the dark.
Avoid, fried foods, sweetened drinks, alcohol and margarine and vegetable oils
In the same way there are foods good for your eyes, there are also ones bad for them. Fried foods and man-made fats such as vegetable oil and margarine can lead to clogged arteries and higher blood pressure. This is also the case with sweetened drinks. Sweetened drinks are proven to increase your triglyceride levels which is bad news for your cardiovascular system and eyes.
